The CBD is most easily identified through its association with the portal vein and the portal vein is most easily identified in the long axis of the gallbladder.  It is the ‘point’ of the exclamation point that is created with the gallbladder in the long-axis.

The CBD and hepatic artery will appear as two smaller circles anterior to the portal vein.  This is often noted as the “Mickey Mouse” sign!
